New York @ Christmas

December 15th 2009

Ahhhh Manhattan is so lovely at Christmas!!! Everywhere just seems to be so festive with beautiful lights, Christmas markets and decent Christmas music. After spending the early evening in the library job hunting, I was contemplating going to see The Lovely Bones.. but decided to venture up 5th Ave towards Rockefeller Centre instead. Passed by Saks department store enroute- they have a great starry lightshow on the building wall which is sychronised to whatever the original song of the 'give a give a Garmin' ad is (talk about successful marketing since I can't even remember what the original is!). Rockefeller was jam packed but very atmospheric, everyone hugely excited by the beautiful sparkly Christmas tree that towers over the ice-rink.

So that was a nice end to a good day... earlier I had lunch at none other than the UN.. Was nice to get out of the USA for an hour or so (UN HQ is international territory). Was able to get a personally guided tour from Dave, an old friend from Trinity, who is finishing up an internship there shortly. Even had to trade in my passport for a visitor pass. Was able to get a look at the general assembly and some other meeting rooms. And lunch in the staff canteen :)

Other than that, the last few days have just been enjoying the lights, the atmosphere, the shopping and everything else that New York is. Thankfully I didn't buy an unlimited subway pass because I've barely used the subway since getting back from DC, I'm 20 blocks from Times Square up Broadway but I just love walking back up from there at night... you miss all the lights otherwise.

Tomorrow is a trip to the DMV to get an ID card since they ID you for every drink here!!
