My second attempt to leave Canada was considerably more successful than the day before!
After a good night's sleep in the Hilton I checked out at noon for my 4pm flight, anticipating a chaotic afternoon at Toronto airport. But by 12.20 I was already checked in thanks to the self service check-in at Air Canada. The machines not only give you your boarding passes but also your baggage tags, so you literally just have to spend 10 seconds at the desk handing over your bag. Off I go around the airport to amuse myselfand wandered the hallway which only 24 hours earlier had been thronged with thousands of lost travellers waiting to check-in. On Monday afternoon that chaos seemed a distant memory.
Because I had to rebook my flight after the cancellation the day before my routing took me to Montreal enroute to Newark. So arrived in Montreal on-time at 5.15pm and walked towards the US connection centre- had to do security check again first though. I had already done US immigration at Toronto the day before so just had to explain this to the CBP guy. BUT, my bag hadn't been registered in the system yet so I had to wait with a few other people off my flight until it showed up on their screen. And then the nicest ever CBP guy sent me on my way happily. Walked on towards my gate and had to do one last security check, where everything in my bag was gone through. For the first time ever this weekend though I've been asked what my needles are.... a question I should have been asked every time I travelled.
Next was onto a flight to Newark, sat beside a lovely guy from Berlin who is studying in Liverpool and in NY for new years. Arrived in NY at 8.30pm, very bumpy due to our 30 seater plane and high winds. Was sitting on a coach into NY at 9pm and back on 42nd St by half past. Jumped on a subway to Brooklyn and made my way to my new place by 10.30pm!
