The Gym

Well I think I've just experienced another truly American experience- the gym!!!

The American gym scene seems to be essential for anyone who isn't in the obese camp. Seems to be a societal thing to be in one camp or the other. Anyhoo, have decided you must pick a lane here, and mine is the healthy one. Alas I purchased a $20 two week trial pass for my local gym. It's local but part of a mega mega chain.

I enter the gym full of New Year ambition... I'm sure they see that every January from most people who sign up! Instantly when I present my pass I'm sent to sit down with a guy who 'will go through my membership details with me'. Uh oh. I start to feel a sense of deja vu....

He cuts straight to the chase and tells me about this really special offer that he can do on the spot, and credit my $20 pass against it. Sounds good but since I don't know how long I'll be in NY I can't commit. He isn't happy about that at all. He messes about, says 'you're all set' followed by 'well hopefully the offer will still be available when you join' and walks off. Funny thing is though, I don't know how to gain entry to the fitness area or where the changing rooms are... so thankfully the receptionist is a hell of a lot more helpful than himself.

Fitness rooms are nice; towels are provided, along with hairdryers and toiletries. I lock up my belongings and head back upstairs. The attire of people at the gym is very different; saw someone wearing tights under shorts today. And a good few people seem to come in, dump their bags and winter coat alongside the treadmill and jump on- very strange I think!

Have done two days at the gym so far... tomorrow will do pilates... now what was that sense of deja vu again?

Oh yeah... I anticipate this in two weeks...
