These are beignets.... one word: yum. Like a doughnut (no hole) but also like fish batter goodness. Delish. Anyway the top place to get these in town is Cafe du Monde in the French Quarter. It's a bit of a tourist trap but very inexpensive and a lovely place to watch the world go by from. Nearby is St Louis Cathedral and Jackson Square.
Today we took an afternoon trip to the swamp! A bus took us about thirty minutes outside the city to the swamplands. We headed out on one of those flat bottomed metal boat thingys down the bayou. We were able to see racoons, turtles and alligators along the edge of the swamp.
To be fair our tour guide was very informative about the different parts of the bayou, but I was getting a bit bored. That was until he produced a little alligator from the closet!!! At first I didn't think it was real but then it started squirming! So he was passed around for us all to hold and have a picture with. He was very squishy and it was a definitely a little intimidating to have an alligator in your hands!
