July 4th/ Birthday weekend

What a great holiday weekend!

Friday night started with a night out with the fresh off the boat J1ers... I really know I'm old when these kids have energy and enthusiasm I remember having five years ago in San Diego!!! Ah the memories of being a young one! The night ended more respectably with my age folk! Got up to watch the Germany match in the city on an hour's sleep... what a great match! Spent the rest of Saturday in my pjs/ sleeping.

Independence Day itself was fun, started the day on Governors Island, a national park that's just 800 yards off the tip of Manhattan, and within view of my office as it happens! Hung out there on the beach in the sun, then to listen to Roseanne Cash play a gig (all free!). Then bailed back on to the ferry to head for our cruise. Makeup job completed on the 1 train and onto the cruise for a 6.30pm departure. The boat pretty much sailed straight up the Hudson River and picked a nice spot within view of the fireworks. Other boats settled around us and there was a nice atmosphere on the River. Fireworks were amazing, and cruise was uber fun. We made great use of the free 3 hour bar too! The fireworks were on from 9.20 to 9.50pm and very nice, though they seemed to lack a good climatic finale! Only complaint was that it really wasn't an outdoor boat and the only real deck area on the top deck was reserved for the owner and his posse, which I thought was a bit much given how much the tickets were. Hit the Brass Monkey downtown after, and then the usual haunts- and even paid a visit to the Mean Fiddler- what I like to think of as the Coppers of NYC.

My birthday itself was pretty low key, the beach had been planned but it was just too hot so instead we sought refuge from the heat in the shade of the trees in Central Park for a while in late afternoon and then went to Blockheads for some cheap and cheerful Mexican food with the best cheap margaritas NYC has to offer, and sat outdoors too.
